MOTORISTS using the Centurion Way roundabout may not be able to believe their eyes soon.

An optical illusion depicting a Roman arch is set to be built in the centre of the junction to improve the image of one of the major routes into Middlewich.

Heritage officer Kerry Fletcher said: “In its current state it’s just a rough piece of grass with dandelions on it.

“People wanted planting and some a sculpture of some kind and so Middlewich Vision got involved as a community regeneration organisation.”

Cheshire East Council, Middlewich Community Pride and Middlewich Vision employed the talents of artist Stephen Charnock.

He worked with residents in workshops in May to come up with a number of designs.

Four ideas were then chosen and the artwork was posted to around 300 homes on the estate for a vote.

The ‘optical arches’ will be made up of two sculptures, which appear to look like a complete Roman arch from certain angles.

It will be funded by an ‘Awards For All’ Lottery Fund and work will start once planning permission is granted.

Kerry added: “I love that the arches have been chosen, it links Middlewich with its Roman past but also to the future by using the optical and artistic approach.

“The arch is a symbol of celebration and status and therefore a good an fitting gateway into our town.

“If anyone else wants to be involved they still can, just get in contact with me at Victoria Buildings.”
