THREE schoolboys have proved that good will is alive and well in Winsford after coming to the rescue of an unconscious homeless woman.

Jack Connor, 13, Liam Matthews, 12, and Josh Holmes, 12, all Year Eight pupils at Verdin High School, were walking to school together on Wednesday morning when they stumbled across on elderly lady slumped in the subway under High Street.

The boys said: “We just saw all these clothes and a trolley and the old woman was lying on the clothes – we thought she was dead because she wasn’t moving.”

While several people walked past and ignored the unconscious lady the quick-thinking boys rushed to get help and reported what they had seen to passing teaching assistant Gillian Lee.

Mrs Lee said: “First of all I thought the boys were messing about, but then I realised it was serious.

“I shook the lady to see if she was alive and she spoke and said she’d been there all night, but then she passed out again – she was very, very cold.

“The boys were really good they listened to the instructions I gave them, used their mobile to call an ambulance and redirected other pupils away from the subway.”

The heroic boys, who all live in Wharton, then waited while the ambulance arrived.

The homeless lady, known only as Sue and believed to be in her 60s, was taken to Leighton Hospital and is said to be in a stable condition.

Verdin High School headteacher Paul Harrington said he was very proud of the boys’ actions.

“I am delighted with what they have done and I phoned their parents to say how proud I was,” he said.

“You hear a lot of stories about teenagers doing bad things and it’s not very often you hear about teenagers doing good things.

“I’m very, very proud of the boys and this is just an indication of what the kids are like at Verdin.

“I’m especially proud that they stayed and helped while adults walked past and did nothing.

“I’m also very pleased with Mrs Lee because not only do our students take an active interest in what’s going on around them, but so do our staff.”

The boys were immediately given awards and gift vouchers and their names will now appear in the school’s hall of fame.

Mr Harrington added: “They really are a credit to their families and to the school.”
