‘BARBENHEIMER’ is almost upon us.

Two of the most hotly anticipated films of the year, Barbie and Oppenheimer, are set to release tomorrow.

As such, staff at the ODEON at Barons Quay in Northwich are preparing for what may be the busiest weekend in years.

Manager Charlie Hunt said: “We're anticipating a very busy weekend!

“We've already got a few sold out showings and I know at some of the busier city ODEON's it has been completely booked up all weekend.

“There's definitely a big buzz about both films and definitely a few guests who have booked for both to do the double whammy, including myself!”

He added: “It's lovely to see such a buzz in cinema around films, I feel like this is something that has been missed post-COVID.

“It feels like the old days of Avengers: End Game again!”

Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig, stars Margot Robbie as the titular character alongside Ryan Gosling as Ken.

Oppenheimer meanwhile is Christopher Nolan’s latest blockbuster and will tell the story of J.Robert Oppenheimer, a physicist who played a key role in the development of nuclear weapons and the Manhattan Project.

Both films are set to release on the same day, July 21, and the occasion has become known as ‘Barbenheimer’ across social media.

To celebrate, staff at the ODEON in Northwich are planning to dress up and the cinema will be selling special themed merchandise.

“We'll be encouraging all our staff to dress up in pink on the day, so hopefully my staff get engaged with that,” said Mr Hunt.

“We have some limited-edition Barbie Cups which have pretty much completely sold out already, before release! So, people are definitely excited.

“If you are planning to do both, I'd suggest Oppenheimer and then Barbie to get some light heartedness at the end of your evening, I hear Oppenheimer is a very emotional film.”

Suzie Welch, ODEON's interim managing director for the UK and Ireland, added: “We have been amazed by the response from guests in the run-up to this Friday, as excitement for the Summer 2023 slate, led by Barbie, Oppenheimer and Mission: Impossible 7, continues to build, showcasing what the big-screen experience is all about.

"As we prepare for the biggest weekend of the year, whether you are dressed in roller blades and head to toe pink, preparing for a 3-hour epic, or combining the two, we know that our guests are going to be both blown away and dazzled by the experience at ODEON."
