MORE than four tonnes of food was donated to the Middlewich & District Foodbank over the winter months.

Middlewich residents gave a shining example of the town’s good nature this winter, by donating enough food to create 285 parcels.

The four tonnes of food – the weight equivalent of an adult elephant – was donated to the foodbank, and most of it was distributed over the same period to individuals and families in financial turmoil.

Rachel Pendleton, project co-ordinator, said: “We are a community organisation who depends on the kindness of our community and the support we have received has been fantastic.

“I would like to give my heartfelt thanks to everyone who donated to the foodbank this year, whether that was through the collections at Tesco, the events at schools or the donations boxes in all the churches.”

Schools and churches around Middlewich organised collections and many businesses offered help and support.

Middlewich Primary School collected donations at its nativity performances, while Cledford Primary School and St Mary's Primary School put on Christmas food collections.

Middlewich High School donated more than 500kg of food in December alone - enough for around 1,250 meals.

Charlotte Walker, from the Middlewich High, said: “This year we participated in our third annual collection for the foodbank and we were overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity of our parents, students and staff.

“The foodbank is a charity we feel passionately about. We want our students to understand the need to give back positively to their community and we were pleased to be able to help so many families.”

Brooks Lane storage firm Spaces and Places donated a storage unit free of charge, so the foodbank could store the extra donations.

Rachel added: “We can only operate with the help of the people of Middlewich and it has been heart-warming to see their enthusiasm and generosity at a time when those who are struggling need it most. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to any of our members if you would like to donate or get involved.”
