TWO Middlewich councillors are pushing for action after measuring speed bumps in the town.

Town councillors Jonathan Parry and Mike Hunter spent an hour and a half on Monday, July 10 using a plank of wood, spirit level and ruler to see whether Middlewich speed bumps meet national regulations.

The maximum height for a speed bump is 100mm but both councillors found a number of them to be as high as 130mm in Chadwick Road.

They have both now called on Cheshire East Council to make their own measurements and determine whether any do break exceed the limit.

Cllr Jonathan Parry said: “We became aware of the problem because of a number of complaints from people about the height of speed bumps.

“When we were out residents came out of their homes to ask what we were doing were saying finally something is being done about this.

“When you have a look at the speed bumps you can see the scrapes on the top where cars are almost bottoming out and some of them are in a really bad condition.

“I don’t believe they’ve been done deliberately. It may be due to the tarmac building up over time but if they are found to be over the limit then they need changing.

“People are saying that they believe damage done to their cars is because of the speed bumps. We need these protective measures in place but they need to be done correctly.

The Middlewich town councillor brought the issue up at a CEC cabinet meeting on Tuesday, July 11.

A professional will now visit Middlewich to assess the measurements of the speed bumps to see whether they meet the legislation.

Cllr Mike Hunter said: “We’re are responding to the comments of our residents and trying to take as much action as possible.

“If they are found by Cheshire East Council to be above the limit then we want them reduced and resurfaced as soon as possible.

“We are taking up this fight because it is causing a lot of problems for people.”
