MIDDLEWICH Town Council have strongly opposed the supported bus service consultation.

At a meeting of Middlewich Town Council on Monday, June 12, a motion was passed to send respond to Cheshire East Council opposing the proposed changes to Middlewich bus services.

The changes would see the 37 service from Crewe to Winsford reduced in the weekday with evening and Saturday services withdrawn completely.

Cllr David Williams, who supplied the motion, said: “Middlewich is getting the worse deal of any town in this reduction of public transport.

“We are struggling with congestion and air quality and a reduction of the services will only force the necessity for more cars on the road.”

The motion also expressed disappointment in the lack of bus service on the Sunday of FAB Festival, and asked to call on CEC to provide a service linking Middlewich to Gadbrook Park and Northwich.

Cllr Williams added: “Not only do we need to strongly oppose these changes, we should call on Cheshire East Council to put their money where their mouth and show commitment to the railway station by offering a service to Northwich.

“This will help people get to work, students get to college and residents get around if they need to.”

Cllr Jean Eaton said: “It will come down to a matter of cost with Cheshire East Council.

“Their decision will be based on whether they can make a profit and if people don’t use the service then they simply won’t put it on.

Cllr Jonathan Parry concluded: “We are asking for Cheshire East Council support as the reason that neighbouring towns get more than we do is because they are constantly making themselves heard.

The motion was passed unanimously and a response will now be sent to CEC.

CEC staff will be answering questions on the review at Middlewich Civic Hall on Thursday, June 15 between 2pm and 7pm.
