A MIDDLEWICH church will host a discussion on the Syria crisis, with an expert set to speak about the ongoing conflict.

St Mary’s Church in New King Street will welcome Alan Thomlinson, who is leading the Syria crisis response for international aid agency CAFOD, to speak on Thursday, January 18 at 10am.

Alan has been working with organisations in Syria and in neighbouring countries since the conflict began in 2011, and says ‘the grind of six years of war has exhausted everyone’.

According to the UN, 300,000 people have died as a result of the conflict, with almost five million Syrians registered as refugees in neighbouring countries as of December 2016.

CAFOD has raised more than £3.5 million in England and Wales, which has helped to provide emergency aid.

Alan added: “The conflict in Syria remains the world’s biggest and most urgent humanitarian crisis.”
