CYCLING superstars such as Bradley Wiggins, Mark Cavendish and Middlewich’s own Kristian House made their way through Middlewich yesterday competing in the Tour of Britain.

Thousands lined the streets to see some of the sport’s top athletes fresh from Olympic glory in Rio and also to cheer on the Middlewich cyclist, who was leading through his home town.

Dave Thompson, events manager at Middlewich Town Council, said: “It was such a great atmosphere. Most of the primary schools were out in force and there were definitely thousands of people lining the streets. Not hundreds, thousands – it’s incredible, and I believe there has been great support all across east Cheshire as well.

“To be able to see something like that coming through your town, why wouldn’t you celebrate it and make the most of it?”

On their first day back to school after the summer holidays, 350 pupils from Middlewich Primary School were taken to St Michael’s Way to cheer on Kristian.

Gemma Reynolds, deputy head teacher at Middlewich Primary School, said: “We all lined the streets with our flags, it was absolutely amazing. It was just so exciting for them. The kids’ enthusiasm was just infectious.

“They were looking out for their favourite cyclists who they’ve seen at the Olympics and also they were all cheering on Middlewich cyclist, Kristian House, which was really nice.

“It’s really inspiring for them and gives the children that impetus to go out and get active.”
