A MOTHER has voiced concerns over parking problems at a Middlewich supermarket, claiming it is putting families off shopping there.

Tesco superstore, in Southway, has come under fire after suggestions that its parent and child spaces are poorly marked and subsequently misused by members of the public.

One Middlewich resident says parking at the store has become dangerous, and believes it has put people off visiting the Southway store.

“I get really nervous about it,” said Andrea Nugent, 31, who lives in Warmingham Lane.

“I park further away to get lots of space, but you get people parked up close to you or people come speeding in who don’t use the road but speed through the empty spaces.

“You do always get people parking in the parent and child spaces but I do think if it was signposted better it would help a little bit. It sounds petty but it’s frustrating.

“People are quick to say ‘you just want to be closer to the store’, but I don’t. I am not bothered as long as I have got the space to get the kids out.

“There was a man parked in one of them so I wound my window down and said ‘excuse me, these are parents and babies spaces’, and he swore at me and walked away. People have been sworn at and been confronted in the store.”

Andrea contacted staff in the store on numerous occasions, but was referred to feedback forms and saw no action taken.

She was also told on Twitter that the store manager claimed the paint was clear but the signage was broken. She added that staff had been helpful once the issue was eventually recognised.

Tesco spokesperson Mark Thomas said, "We regret any shopping trip that is not what our customers expect of us.

“We're glad to be made aware of the issue, recognise that these spaces could be clearer and will be working on resolving this issue."

Tesco have not given any date for proposed works, although the store claims to have applied for funding to improve the signage.

Cllr Mike Parsons added that the town council is aware of the issue, and is set to discuss options with Tesco.
