MIDDLEWICH’S Greenheyes Farm will open its gates to the public this weekend, as part of Open Farm Sunday run by Linking Environment and Farming (LEAF).

Hundreds of farms across the country will take part in the scheme this Sunday, June 5, offering an insight into the services modern day farms provide.

The day offers activities for the whole family, who can get out and learn more about the huge impact farms have on everyday life.

Farmer Phil Smallwood said: It’s a great way for people to come out and see what we do on an ordinary small farm, which is what we are so we would say to people put your wellies on!

“We have all three classes of livestock that people can come and see, that’s cattle pig and sheep, and I have always got some chicks or ducks as well.

“We have giveaways and samples, recipe leaflets for the adults and things like cress seeds to give away so the kids can have a go at growing.”

Other farms taking part across Cheshire include Riverside Organic farm in Davenham and Reaseheath College in Nantwich.

Phil will be offering guided tours of Greenheyes, along with chances to meet the animals and – weather dependant – a display of machinery from what he calls ‘the good old days’.

LEAF, who deliver more sustainable food and farming, are encouraging members of the public to take part.

A spokesman said: “You may not realise it but our lives depend on the diverse products farmers grow.

“Visiting a farm on the 5th June you will learn more about sustainable farming, and get a great insight into the role farmers play in looking after our countryside.

“So round up the family, put on your wellies and head to the countryside to meet a farmer and have a great day out experiencing all the sights, sounds and science of the farm.”

All are welcome to Greenheyes Farm, CW10 9JE, between 11am and 5pm on Sunday.
