AFTER four months of fundraising Civil War lectures, a battlefield marker commemorating Middlewich’s involvement in the war will be unveiled this month.

Middlewich mayor Cllr Ken Kingston will unveil the Middlewich Civil War Battlefield Marker on Saturday, April 30, as part of the Middlewich ‘Past and Present’ Exhibition.

He will be joined by his guests and supporters of the Civil War Project who helped us raise the money for the marker to be installed in Victoria Square, in front of the Victoria Building.

Kerry Fletcher, Middlewich Town Council heritage officer, said: “This permanent reminder of the two battles at Middlewich will take pride of place in the middle of the 2nd battlefield where so many people lost their lives on December 26, 1643.”

The unveiling of the marker is the culmination of a year-long project in partnership which started with the two-day Civil War Weekend in May 2015 with the English Civil War Society.

Kerry added: “The Battlefield’s Trust then stepped in to help Middlewich Town Council organise a lecture series on the Civil War in Cheshire which ran between September to December 2015 at the Wych Centre.

“All proceeds went to the Marker and Tesco Middlewich helped us with refreshments for the events and a raffle prize. In all £1,000 was raised. Thank you to all those who came along to the events or bought a raffle ticket and I hope you would join us for our unveiling.”

The unveiling will happen at 11am and everyone is welcome.
