VOLUNTEERS in Middlewich are preparing to join forces to get the town looking spick and span in time for the Queen’s 90th birthday.

The Clean for the Queen campaign aims to clear up Britain in time for The Queen’s landmark birthday on April 21, 2016.

It will rally an army of volunteers across the country to clean up their areas and will include a special clean-up weekend on March 4–6.

In light of this, Middlewich Clean Team will partner up with Middle Wyches WI and Middlewich U3A on March 5 to litter pick all corners of the town to lead the way in the Clean for the Queen initiative.

Sue Johns, Middlewich U3A chairman, said: “We are a very active and energetic U3A and our members are really keen to get out there and help to make the town sparkle.

“We approached the Clean Team to see if they would support us on this and were pleased that they agreed to help us to organise a special litter pick.”

The litter pick will start from Town Bridge at 2pm on Saturday, March 5.

Susan Leicester, Middle Wyches WI president, said: “The National Federation of Women’s Institutes has adopted Clean for the Queen as one of its projects for the year.

“So Middle Wyches WI were delighted not only to be involved in a clean-up in the town but also to work with other community organisations.”

Clean for The Queen was launched by Country Life magazine in partnership with Keep Britain Tidy, and asks is residents and community groups to rally together and join in the big clean-up.

The aim is to inspire a million people to take action and enjoy a few hours together litter picking to make the places where they live more enjoyable and instil a sense of pride in their communities.

Janet Chisholm, Middlewich Clean Team chairman, hopes Middlewich residents will pull together to take part in the clean-up, which could potentially be the biggest in UK history.

Janet said: “We hope that other Middlewich organisations and individuals will join in with this initiative and we will be able to cover areas of the town we are not able to visit very often.”
