THE notorious accident black spot that is Booth Lane in Middlewich could be set for further speed reductions after the latest fatal accident in May.

The A533 Booth Lane which runs from Middlewich to Sandbach has been the scene of five fatalities within the past three years with the latest being 72-year-old Janet Thompson in May.

Cheshire East Councillor and Middlewich ward member Cllr Mike Parsons has previously successfully fought to get the speed limit reduced along small stretches of the road but is now making headway in getting the speed limit along the whole road reduced.

Cllr Parsons: “I put it to highways that we would want it put to 50mph all the way along Booth Lane.

“I have done what I can do I have got it on the Highways importance list. I’m pushing it with the police and I want to get the police and Highways together to discuss it.

“We know we need more than 50mph signs though, that won’t be enough.”

“While I’m still pushing it with highways they don’t have to listen to me as it’s not in my ward now so I’ve been working with John Wray from Brereton ad Gillian Merry from Elworth to try and get Highways to do something.

Lorraine Neal, whose son James Harrold was involved in a crash on his motorbike on Booth Lane in 2012 and had to have his legs amputated, has given her support to the speed reduction.

Lorraine said: “The last few accidents have been involving young people and I don’t think they would take much notice of a reduced speed limit sign. I think the speed limit needs to be reduced but we also need speed traps to catch and punish people. That’s the only way to stop the accidents from happening.

“I totally agree with Mike and I fully support him in trying to the get the speed limit changed all along Booth Lane.

“All the years I have been in Middlewich Booth Lane has been a race track and it’s not safe with the canal alongside. If you lose control on Booth Lane, you are going to end up in the canal.”
