THE Middlewich public has been praised after the town’s food bank received its biggest collection to date.

Middlewich Tesco off Southway placed a permanent collection box for Middlewich Food Bank in the store in March and staff decided to take part in the national food bank collection weekend to help out the charity.

Staff, volunteers and schoolchildren from Middlewich High School spent time over the three days from Thursday, July 2, to Saturday, July 4, encouraging shoppers to donate items into collection trolleys.

Leslie Birchall, from Middlewich Tesco, said: “It was a national food bank collection that Tesco stores did all over the country and we obviously wanted to support the Middlewich Food Bank.

“It was a really good weekend, it did really well.

“We collected more than 80 boxes of food. It’s gone off to get counted and now whatever the total is, Tesco will be matching it.

“Throughout the three days we had members of staff, volunteers and school children giving out shopping lists to customers and encouraging them to get a couple of extra things for the food bank.

“We’ve been out there to the warehouse and it’s a fantastic job they’re doing. I don’t think people are aware how much other people can benefit from it.”

The collection went better than any other that any other that had been done before with the amount raised equalling 2,000 meals, and manager Debi Williams put it down to the work from Tesco staff and Middlewich High.

Debi said: “It was the biggest collection we’ve had so far and I think it was because Tesco really got involved and did everything they could to help us such as helping get volunteers. Middlewich High School made a massive difference as well, the trolley was full by the time they left.”
