THE new mayor of Middlewich for 2015/16 has been announced as Cllr Ken Kingston.

Middlewich Town Council voted for their new mayor on Monday and Cllr Kingston was given the honour to represent the town for the next year.

Cllr Kingston was proposed as mayor by fellow councillor Bernice Walmsley and the proposal was seconded by a new face on the Middlewich Town Council, Cllr Mike Hunter.

Cllr Walmsley said: “To represent people successfully you have to be involved in the community and Ken is definitely involved in the community of Middlewich.

“Many people will know Ken from the town’s poppy appeal for which he works tirelessly. His other great interest is the town’s heritage on which he works to preserve and protect as a member of the Middlewich Heritage Society. So I have no hesitation in putting forward Cllr Ken Kingston as Mayor of Middlewich for 2015/16.”

The new mayor accepted the offer and said he was looking forward to the full schedule in Middlewich over the next 12 months.

Cllr Kingston said: “I’m looking forward to my civic duties starting with the first event which will be this weekend where I will welcome people to the battle of Middlewich.

“I’d like to point just a few of the events I am looking forward to attending as Mayor; FAB 25 will be some achievement as it’s the 25th anniversary of Middlewich Folk and Boat Festival, the national town criers championship, the Middlewich Literary Festival.”

Cllr Kingston will take over from Paul Edwards as mayor of Middlewich who has also, along with his wife Sonya, retired from the council this year.

Paul said: “Touching on not only the last 12 months but the last 12 years as a councillor, I want to thank all the councillors I have worked with at both town and borough council during that time and thank everyone who has advised me along the way.

“I would like to wish Ken all the best for this year and congratulate him on being selected as mayor and I’m sure he will be ably supported by his deputy. And last I’d like to thank my wife for her devotion and support to me in everything I have done, not only in the last 12 months, or the last 12 years as councillor, but the last 30 years we’ve been married.”

Cllr Pam Farrell was elected as deputy mayor.
