MIDDLEWICH Town Council has thanked residents for their support during the Great War Project and says it looks forward to further years of remembrance.

The project was officially launched to commemorate 100 years since the start of the First World War by Councillor Bernice Walmsley in October 2013 during her time as Town Mayor and earlier this month thousands of people came to the town to take part in the Great War Weekend.

Kerry Fletcher, Heritage development officer at the Town Council, said: “A really big thank you goes out to everybody who took part in the event and made it a success.

“There was some really inspirational and touching displays for people to share, we hope that everyone enjoyed the experience and reap the rewards of their hard work.

The Great War Project will run until the Peace Event in July 2019 and the finished town archive will be deposited as part of a larger network of commemoration in the Imperial War Museum.

“This is the beginning of our own remembrance, not the end.

“Our aim is not only to know the Middlewich people who served in WWI, but to understand more about today’s Middlewich resident’s families during the conflict.”
