DRIVERS go the wrong way around the one-way system at Newton Bank on a daily basis according to residents who live facing the island.

The one-way system that joins Nantwich Road and St Michael’s Way to Newton Bank has proved to be a confusing route for drivers new to the area for a while and now residents who overlook it have spoke of their concern about the safety of motorists.

Clive Mockford, 59, and his wife Laura-Jane, 26, live at the bottom of Nantwich Road, looking out onto the one way system and claim it is only a matter of time before there is a serious head-on collision.

Laura-Jane said: “It’s an ongoing thing, we’ve had two near head-on misses just in the last week.
“It really isn’t an easy mistake to make it is simply stupidity or if not that it’s people just following Sat Nav’s and not concentrating on the road.

“I think there are plenty of signs and it is clear enough to me when I drive but obviously something needs to be done about it because if this doesn’t get sorted someone is going to die.”

Clr Mike Parsons, Cheshire East ward member for Middlewich, says the problem has been the council’s list of things to do for months but will now be made a priority following the increased concern.

Clr Parsons said: “If it is happening this much we need to make the signage clearer.

“I think the main problem is when people turn the wrong way coming out of Morrisons because there is a big white arrow on the road but if a car in front is blocking it could maybe cause confusion.

“Having said that, to me, if you make that mistake you shouldn’t even be driving but it needs more signs before there is an accident.

“I have written to Cheshire East Highways about it and it is on the to-do list but I will be flagging it up as a priority now.”
