A RESIDENT has called for more to be done by the council after seeing dog owners refusing to pick up their dog’s mess from a children’s play area.

Janine Roberts, a Middlewich resident, claims to see people taking their dogs onto the child’s park on Webbs Lane daily, despite their being signs stating ‘no dogs allowed’, and not cleaning up after them.

Janine said: “The number of people who take their dogs onto the play area and don’t pick up after them is outrageous.

“There are signs saying that dogs are not allowed on the park and people are not only ignoring that but leaving dog mess in there for little children to come and walk right through it.

Janine claims it is commonly known as a problem around the area and has long been angered by it, but now says enough is enough and punishments need to be dished out.

Janine added: “I’ve seen some dog walkers go into the park to let their dogs do their business in there, and they don’t even have a child, so they have no reason to go in there with their dogs.

“I’ve been in touch with the council and they just said they would come and clean it up but that doesn’t really fix the problem.

“I think they need to be punished more because they’ll only be punished once, they won’t do it again.”

Failing to pick up dog foul is punishable with a fine of up to £1,000 and can be issued by the council.

Clr Michael Parsons has echoed Janine’s call for action, saying there is more that the council can do about it.

Clr Parsons said: “Dog mess has been a problem in Middlewich for quite a number of years and I am personally sick of it.

“People don’t tend to know this but the community wardens who can give out fines for not picking up dog mess can legally wear plain clothes.

“So why not send them out and catch people red handed to send out a message.
“There is definitely more that can be done.”
