A PERMANENT tribute to one of the legends of Middlewich’s waterways will be unveiled at the weekend.

After a successful £1,800 appeal by Inland Waterways Association, an interpretation panel in memory of Maureen Shaw will be launched at 2pm on Saturday at Wardle Lock, the place she called her home.

The 77-year-old, who died a year ago, was one of the original boatwomen to work on the canals.

Her panel will chronicle her life from being adopted into the Jinks’ boating family, driving horse boats as a child, the days with narrowboat Spey and working on the canals with her husband Jack on narrowboat Dace.

Maureen’s daughter Sharron Underwood and her husband Ralph are flying in from Thailand for the celebration.

Fiona Bruce MP will also give a speech about Maureen and the contribution of the working boat people during the war years.

After the event, guests will be invited back to the Boars Head to raise a toast.
