I REALISE that mobility scooters give a lot of infirm, elderly and disabled people freedom and independence.

But I think that before anyone starts using one they should have to pass a safety driving course.

These vehicles can be lethal!

If they hit anyone they could cause serious injury as they often travel at such speed.

I am fed up having to jump out of the way of people who seem to think they can hurtle along the pavement – regardless of any pedestrians being in their way.

Not to mention those who even ride along main roads leaving motorists struggling to weave round them.

It’s a wonder more accidents haven’t been caused.

I have had the back of my heels caught by a thoughtless individual who believed they had priority over me in a shopping area.

I have been amazed to watch some disabled people jump off their mobility scooters and dive into reduced food fridges in supermarkets!

Their speed and dexterity at shoving other shoppers out of the way whilst on their feet belies their need for a disability aid.

You need a driving licence to operate a scooter or motorbike on the road. Pavements are used by members of the public, young and old, including mums with prams, who need protection.

Training should be mandatory for these mobility scooters.

In the meantime, can I implore anyone who travels on these vehicles to take their time and spare a thought for pedestrians.
