WITH Remembrance Sunday this weekend, Middlewich has taken a unique approach to remembering the town’s fallen heroes.

Poppies have cropped up on lampposts around the town, and will guide the way for Sunday’s Remembrance Parade.

Ken Kingston, chairman of the Royal British Legion Middlewich Branch, came up with idea to put poppies on lampposts along Wheelock Street last year, and has this year decided to go a step further.

Businesses around town provided sponsorship to the Middlewich Branch to cover the costs of the poppies and SP Energy sent staff to put the poppies up on the lampposts free of charge.

Ken, who is also a former Middlewich Town Mayor, said: “Last year we had some up on Wheelock Street and they were very well received, so this year we managed to get some sponsorship from local businesses and have put them up all over town.

“It’s there as a mark of respect and remembrance with Remembrance Sunday and the parade coming up, as well as to promote the Poppy Appeal, which Middlewich people are always so generous with.

“But they’re also there as a reminder to people that the Middlewich Royal British Legion is here to help service people in Middlewich.”

The parade will leave the Royal British Legion in Lewin Street at 10.30am and head to the war memorial at the Bull Ring.

The ceremony will start with the last post and two-minute silence at 11am before the wreaths are laid and a reading from deputy lieutenant Graham Phillips.

Ken added: “The last few years we have had around 1,000 people in attendance and we’re hoping to have the same this year.

“The thing that’s been noticeable in recent years is the number of young people attending. It’s lovely to see and hopefully it will be the same this year.”
