WHAT on earth is going on with the Lion Salt Works?

By my reckoning, Cheshire West and Chester Council is sitting on millions of pounds of Lottery money to restore it and turn it into a museum and visitor centre yet whenever a question is asked about when work is likely to start, we never get a straight answer.

A couple of weeks ago, the Guardian reported that a council official said everything was in hand and work would start in the autumn.

Then, a letter from Clr Helen Weltman appeared saying the site doesn’t even have planning permission and that more checks have to be made to see if the site is safe because parts of it are over the old Adelaide salt mine.

One planning application has already lapsed and I understand a second one has had to be made but given that it hasn’t yet got approval, how can work start on a site that doesn’t have planning permission?

It makes the council sound more like the residents of Dale Farm.

Someone, somewhere at CWAC is being economical with the truth and has been, it would appear, over a long period of time.

Let’s not forget, the funding for this project is coming from public money and we, the public have a right to know how our cash is being spent.

My advice to the mandarins at CWAC is get your act together, get your story straight and tell us the truth.
