AT 10am on Sunday, July 8 I was in Sainsbury’s petrol station in Northwich, filling my car with petrol.

I decided to pay at the at the pump, and after retrieving my card I put it in my wallet and for convenience placed the wallet on the roof of my car.

A stupid decision.

After filling with petrol, I then proceeded to drive away with the wallet still on the roof.

A few minutes later, I realised my mistake, rushed back to the petrol station and after checking with the cash desk that it hadn’t been handed in, I started frantically rushing round the station and surrounding roads for my wallet.

To no avail.

I rushed home and proceeded to list the contents of my wallet: A good sum of cash (I had drawn £100 out the day before), credit cards, driver’s licence, numerous loyalty cards etc.

I cancelled my credit cards and then at about 6pm returned to the petrol station on the off chance my wallet had been returned.

No joy.

I returned home cursing the type of people who would keep the wallet and decided to go down to the police station next morning and check with them but wasn’t feeling very optimistic.

Early next morning just as I was preparing to go to the police station my phone rang.

It was the police. They asked me if I would like to be reunited with an item I may have lost.

Yes, it was my wallet with all its contents.

As I collected my wallet from the police station I asked if they knew the name of lady who had handed it in but she hadn’t left her name and I had no means of contacting her.

I would like to thank the police for their help and to the unknown lady, I can only hope she reads the Northwich Guardian and reads this article, she has restored my faith in human nature.
