I READ with absolute hilarity last week’s instalment of the Barons Quay saga in the Guardian, where councillors Naylor and Dolan now claim that Brexit and the internet are to blame for the lack of businesses moving in.

Also, now claiming that previous administrations were responsible for the situation.

Looking back through numerous news articles, both go on the record stating it was great Northwich was finally getting the investment to regenerate the town, nowhere a comment about the risk of spending £60m of tax payers’ money and not being able to deliver the regeneration or jobs for the town.

I have no doubt that changes that were made by CWAC to the original plan are mostly to blame for the failing of this project.

The original project had a hotel in scope, residential dwelling provision in addition to the retail offering, the hotel and residential areas were taken out of the plans.

CWAC would do well to go and visit numerous successful initiatives and learn some lessons, for example, go The Lowry at Salford Quays or the Gloucester Quays, both very successful. They both have hotels, residential areas, these are guaranteed customers for the leisure industry and they form the basis of a community which underlies business and retail.

Instead, CWAC chop them out of the plans and continue building phases two and three despite having no takers for the majority of phase one retail.

Then to add injury to insult they bulldoze through parking charges having spent £60m of our money they now want to charge us for parking in a decaying, sprawling and empty shopping area.

If that’s not enough they mess around for so long that TK Maxx pull out and ‘review their retail plan’.

I, for one, think the council needs people with proper business and negotiating skills who can make a real difference to Northwich and spend our money wisely.

Roll on the next council elections.
