THE best yet – that’s how Terry Murphy described Town’s cup cruise on Saturday.

Mike Brandon, pictured right, rediscoverd his shooting boots to fire a four-goal salvo in the Witches’ 6-0 demolition of Old Altrinchamians in the Cheshire FA Amateur Cup third round.

Goals from Steve Warburton and Dave Tasker completed the rout.

“We were just too good for them,” purred Murphy.

“I thought we started well and when Mike made it 2-0 they were shot to pieces – there was no way they would recover after that.”

Town’s stellar show rammed home their superiority after that.

They have now netted 21 times without reply in November, a run that has seen them open up a four-point lead at the top of the Cheshire League and earn a spot in the last 16 of the county cup.

Ever the pragmatist, Murphy warned: “Nothing is won now.

“It’s more of the same from here, starting with Saturday.

“We did a good job to go through but that’s only one game in a long season.”

Brandon’s return to top form, capped by a splendid third goal volleyed into the top corner from distance, was the highlight of Town’s weekend.

He had only bagged his first goals of the season the previous weekend.

“I’m made up for him to be honest,” said Murphy.

“By his own standards he’s had a quiet start to the season, he’ll be the first to tell you that, but he’s been in for extra training and we reaped the benefits.

“In that form he’s pretty much unplayable.”

Town welcome old foes Pilkington on Saturday, kick off 2.15pm, a side that last year pushed them all the way in the title race.

A poor start this time around has left them floundering in midtable.

“We’re not fooled by that,” said Murphy.

“They’re better than their position suggests so we’ll need to be on top of our game once more.”

Town travel to Curzon Ashton Reserves next Tuesday, December 2, in a rearranged league game.

Ryan Broadhead will be missing through suspension.
