ROSS Speight has warned Middlewich Town’s rivals his side is getting better after they ended Mersey Valley’s unbeaten start to a new season on Saturday.

The Witches came from behind to win 2-1, a second successive victory on their travels in League One this term.

“We had to be at our best,” said the co-manager.

“The players showed improvement from our draw with Daten in midweek, and we must maintain those standards with another tough couple of games to come.”

Town had led 2-0 against Daten on Wednesday thanks to goals from captain Sam O’Sullivan and newcomer Rory Gorton, only for their opponents – who have former Middlewich assistant manager Paul Anderson in charge – to rally late on.

Middlewich are due to host promoted Deva tomorrow, Wednesday, kick-off 6.30pm.

They host Styal on Saturday.

Mersey Valley 1-3 Middlewich Town 2

CHRIS Lunn’s quick-thinking earned for Middlewich Town an impressive victory on their travels to Mersey Valley last Saturday.

He steered in a free kick that caught the home team off-guard, completing a comeback that had started when in-form Rory Gorton had cancelled out an early opener.

The Sale-based outfit had taken the lead when Dwayne Greenwood drilled low into the bottom corner.

Gorton restored parity though with his third goal in four games, firing with power past goalkeeper Connor Beard.

Lunn’s decisive moment followed on 70 minutes, while custodian Charles Masters made a couple of saves to help the Witches to protect their lead.

“It was an excellent performance, and we had to work hard for the three points,” added Speight.
