MIDDLEWICH Town were denied a chance to close a gap to first place in Cheshire League One when their trip to leaders Billinge was aborted.

Saturday's contest, like most of the others in the competition, was called off after heavy rain left the hosts' pitch waterlogged.

It leaves the Witches fourth in the table, and without another scheduled league fixture until the middle of January.

They return to action next on Saturday week, December 12, when they resume their campaign in the JA Walton Challenge Cup.

Middlewich reserves play their remaining group-stage fixture in the Mid-Cheshire District FA Challenge Cup this weekend, when they host Winsford Saxons at Seddon Street.

The Witches lost their opening encounter 4-1 at Winnington Avenue 1994, meaning they must beat the Crewe and District League leaders - and by more than three goals - to qualify for the quarter finals.

Their scheduled league game at Styal last Saturday was postponed.
