MIDDLEWICH Cricket Club first team are quietly confident of securing promotion this season.

So says captain Chris Broomfield.

The Cheshire County League Division Two outfit are four games from the end of the season and are currently nine points behind second place Grappenhall – who they face on Saturday.

Chris said that after a recent good run of form the players are looking forward to the run in.

“Saturday is a crunch game for both sides. If we can pick up a good result against them then both teams will be in the mix,” he said.

“We’ve got a young team and we are up for the challenge. We’ve got three games at home out of the four so that is a bonus for us.”

Chris, who has been out injured with an ankle injury in the past couple of weeks, added that the players know it is not a given that they will go up.

“I wouldn’t say we are guaranteed to go up. We lost out earlier in the season and we have been close on a number of occasions to getting the extra 10 points – in that respect we’ve been consistent.”

The rain saved them on Saturday against top of the table Irby. After making 183-6, rain halted the visitors’ charge to the finish when they were on 162-6 after 33 overs.

Chris added: “It was a bit of a blessing in disguise on Saturday. If we had managed to get a few more runs they would have had a problem but we didn’t bat well in the middle order.

“They bowled quite tight but it’s always nice to get a few extra points, it balances itself out over the season.”
