ANOTHER hectic week of midweek football action includes two teams in action on Monday night.

That includes Winsford United hosting Runcorn Town, early pacesetters in the North West Counties League’s top-flight, at Barton Stadium.

A highlight of the fixture list is Witton Albion’s home date with Hyde United on Tuesday.

However Middlewich Town have been a must-see at Seddon Street this season after two six-goal thrillers.

The Witches host Eagle Sports in a Cheshire League encounter there on Wednesday.

Why not go and give your local side a cheer?

Here’s our pick of the action:

Monday, August 20

North West Counties League

Premier Division (kick-off 7.45pm)

Whitchurch Alport v 1874 Northwich

A first meeting between the clubs takes place at Yockings Park, where visitors 1874 Northwich hope to record a first league victory of the season.

They improved during the second-half of a 1-1 draw with Abbey Hey on Saturday, when Scott McGowan’s penalty earned for them a deserved share of the spoils.

Whitchurch, promoted from Division One via the play-offs last season, lost narrowly against Padiham at the same time.

North West Counties League

Premier Division (kick-off 7.45pm)

Winsford United v Runcorn Town

Blues feel they didn’t do themselves justice during a 4-1 defeat at Northwich Victoria on Saturday when most observers agreed they were the better side for the opening 60 minutes.

They will hope to be more ruthless in front of goal against in-form Runcorn Town, who have scored a dozen goals in their three Premier Division fixtures to date.

It’s highly unlikely to be dull…

Tuesday, August 20

Northern Premier League

Premier Division (kick-off 7.45pm)

Witton Albion v Hyde United

Carl Macauley’s men were minutes away from a highly-creditable draw at South Shields in their Northern Premier League opener on Saturda.

However Carl Finnigan’s late header secured a 2-1 win for the bookies’ favourites to win the title.

Albion’s first home fixture of the campaign is against another promoted side in the form of Hyde, who were impressive victors against Basford United.

The hosts will be happy to put their first points on the board ahead of a testing double-header over the Bank Holiday weekend.

North West Counties League

Premier Division (kick-off 7.45pm)

Burscough v Northwich Victoria

These teams are due to play each other in the FA Cup, and at the same venue too, next weekend.

The Linnets’ fortunes have been decidedly better in that competition after they eliminated 1874 Northwich following a penalty shoot-out at the previous stage.

However three successive defeats in North West Counties League fixtures, including a 3-0 reverse at home to Bootle, leaves them bottom of the Premier Division table.

Vics, on the other hand, make a trip to Lancashire buoyed by beating neighbours Winsford United.

Cheshire League

League One (kick-off 6.30pm)

Grappenhall Sports v Lostock Gralam

The Grey Lambs have recorded back-to-back Cheshire League wins in the past week, including a 2-0 success against Windle Labour at Park Stadium on Saturday.

They have played Grappenhall already, losing out by the odd goal in seven, and will be motivated to avenge that narrow reverse when they make a short trip to Warrington.

Lostock led 3-2 at the interval in that head-to-head too.

Wednesday, August 21

North West Counties League

Premier Division (kick-off 7.45pm)

Barnton v Cheadle Town

The Villagers have suffered three successive defeats on their travels since recording a 1-0 win against St Martins at Townfield on the season’s opening afternoon.

That includes a 5-2 reverse at Eccleshall on Saturday, when captain Chris Smith scored both their goals.

Cheadle Town also haven’t celebrated a victory in the same period, and were denied maximum points by Stone Old Alleynians at the weekend when their hosts scored an equaliser with time running out.

Cheshire League

Premier Division (kick-off 6.30pm)

Middlewich Town v Eagle Sports

The Witches have adjusted impressively to playing at a higher level, and are unbeaten in their first five matches.

However they were dismayed to let slip a 3-0 lead on Saturday against Billinge, who scored three times in the closing stages to pinch a point.

Town were also held 3-3 by Crewe earlier this month after reaching the interval with a two-goal advantage.

Eagle have endured mixed fortune but followed a hammering of Billinge last Wednesday with a slender victory at Pilkington at the weekend.
