JAMIE Petrie’s last-minute goal secured for Middlewich Town maximum points on Saturday when they continued an encouraging start to the season.

A 2-1 win at home to FC St Helens, promoted from League One at the end of last term along with the Witches, leaves them with seven points from three games in the top-flight.

Callum Priestley was also on target for Town after the interval.

Lostock Gralam collected a first point of the campaign in League One after sharing four goals with their hosts Halebank.

Tom Beech ran clear to put the home team in front before a goal apiece from brothers Charlie and Robbie Hatton turned the contest in the Grey Lambs’ favour.

However Beech levelled direct from a free-kick to make it 2-2.

Cuddington, much-changed from a side that had put eight goals past St Helens Town reserves in their League Two opener, drew with Rylands’ second string.

The men from Norley Road were thwarted by a fine save from their opponents’ goalkeeper after Joe Lanceley teed up Ben Curbishley.

At the other end, Cuddy custodian Tom Wilson matched that feat following a counter-attack by the Warrington-based hosts.

However Rylands took the lead before the break through a powerful volley.

Cuddington did not trail for long though, Curbishley finishing smartly three minutes into the second-half after shrugging off a challenge from a defender.

Wilson remained resolute at the other end, including from the 80th minute when Lanceley was sent off Paul Codling after being cautioned by referee Paul Codling for a second time.

Newcomers Winnington Avenue 1994 played for most of the second-half with 10 men during their encounter with Cheadle Town’s reserves.

Their resilience was rewarded with a draw though thanks to Buba Drammeh’s first-half goal.

Luke Cotton scored for the visitors.

Middlewich’s reserves played out a 2-2 draw with their Pilkington counterparts.

Player co-manager Chris Holbrooks and Matthew Cann claimed the Witches’ goals in St Helens.
