TAKING up a sport to build confidence has led to Molly Blears being crowned a world champion.
The 14-year-old sealed gold in kata (patterned moves) for the Shukokai Shitoryu Karate Alliance of England in Dundee.
Her success came in the 13 to 14 years age group for female mini cadets, green to black belt.
“We are so proud of what our daughter has achieved, it was amazing to watch her performance,” said her mum, Amanda.
“She has trained hard at her karate club for the past 12 months in preparation for the championships.
“Molly was totally focused, it shows that her hard work was all worth it.
“She started with the sport to build on confidence as she was very shy but now she’s a world champion.
“I can’t thank her senseis (coaches) Emily Waring and Kathryn King enough for all their hard work and commitment; they have been absolutely fantastic”
The Middlewich High School pupil joined Koshido-Ryu Karate Club in Winsford seven years ago.
Although this is the second-dan black belt’s first major win, she has always been ranked within the top 10 and has taken part in the world championships previously.
