STYAL completed a classic smash-and-grab to inflict upon Middlewich Town a first defeat of the season in the Cheshire League.

Scott Barlow’s decisive goal five minutes from time acted as a punishment for the Witches after they had dominated for long spells at Seddon Street.

“I don’t think I’ve ever witnessed such a one-sided game and lost it,” said co-manager Ross Speight afterwards.

“We did everything but score.”

Town sit sixth in League One ahead of a short trip to play a return game with neighbours Lostock Gralam tonight, Tuesday.

The teams drew 1-1 earlier this month, but the Grey Lambs’ 3-2 loss at FC St Helens at the weekend was a third in succession.

Middlewich Town 0-1 Styal
MIDDLEWICH failed to score for the first time this term despite controlling a contest with fellow fast-starters Styal on Saturday.

The Witches had opportunities to score before the break, but could not find the net.

And the patter did not chance in the second half, when a killer touch that had delivered three wins in their previous five League One games deserted them.

Instead Scott Barlow poached the game’s only goal with time running out.

“We played well,” reflected Town co-manager Ross Speight.

“But sadly you don’t pick up points for simply zipping the ball about.

“I’ve said it previously, but we have to be more ruthless in front of goal.”

Golborne Sports are their guests on Saturday, kick-off 3pm.
