ROSS Speight has warned Middlewich Town’s rivals that his side is due to thrash an opponent based on the number of chances they’ve been creating.

The Witches host Styal, with whom they share second spot in Cheshire League One after five games, at Seddon Street later buoyed by their display on Wednesday night while inflicting a first defeat of the campaign on promoted Deva Athletic.

“I’m happy with how we played defensively – we were excellent,” said the co-manager.

“We can do more in front of goal, that’s for sure, and I’m confident everything will click soon and that we’ll hit somebody with an emphatic score-line.”

Styal, demoted from the Premier Division at the end of last term, shared four goals in a draw with Cheadle Town’s reserves in midweek.

They put five goals past Garswood United too last weekend.

Kick-off is at 3pm.

Middlewich Town 1-0 Deva Athletic

SAM Wakefield’s strike from distance before the break secured for Middlewich Town a first home success of a new season.

The front man found the net from outside of the penalty area on 17 minutes, and it proved enough to see off spirited opponents.

Deva, promoted from Cheshire League Two, did prompt Charles Masters, the Witches’ goalkeeper, into a pair of smart saves at the start of the second half.

However they were reduced to 10 men shortly afterwards, and Town took control.

Alex Burns and Geoff Basford both went close to doubling their side’s advantage, although in the end a single goal was enough.
