ROSS Speight believes Middlewich Town’s new recruits can inspire the Witches to put together an improved run of results.

Among them is former professional Michael Carr, a midfielder that played for Morecambe in the Football League after making more than 150 appearances for Northwich Victoria.

Jamie Petrie, who played at Seddon Street earlier in his career, has also returned on a transfer from Flint Town.

“We’ve worked hard to add to what we feel is already a talented squad,” said the co-manager.

“It’s exciting for us to add two experienced lads like them to what is a young group, and we’ve a couple more signings in the pipeline too.”

Middlewich have also borrowed youngsters Jordan Bennion and George Hopkins from Nantwich in the past month.

Speight added: “We’re now almost back to the strength in depth we had last season.”

Middlewich have played half of their fixtures in Cheshire League One already, winning only twice.

They sit outside the top 10 following a 2-2 draw at FC St Helens on Saturday, although an improved performance has left Speight feeling optimistic.

“We were excellent and probably should have come away with maximum points,” he said.

“We’ve worked hard to turn things around, and I expect more of the same next weekend.”

Chris Lunn scored twice for Middlewich to establish an interval advantage, only for their hosts to earn a share of the spoils after they were awarded three penalties by referee Shane Clarke in the second half.

“I’ve never seen that before, but the lads showed great character to recover after each disappointment,” added Speight.

The Witches host Daten this Saturday.
