Middlewich Town 5 Egerton 3

MIDDLEWICH ended October with a perfect record after recording a fourth successive victory on Saturday.

It leaves the Witches fourth in Cheshire League One, six points adrift of a promotion position.

James Dean's contender for goal of the season broke the deadlock against visitors Egerton, the attacker dribbling past half-a-dozen players before slotting a tidy finish past goalkeeper Chris Davies.

Town's guests responded, and custodian Charles Masters kept their lead intact before Callum Priestley doubled it when he met Sam Wakefield's cross with his head.

And Wakefield, making his first appearance at Seddon Street, turned scorer when he latched on to Dave Griffin's pass to make it 3-0 with an emphatic finish.

When leading marksman Michael Evans added to Town's advantage before the break, the contest appeared to be over.

A fifth goal followed the interval when Mike Whitehead turned in Jack Weedall's free kick - the Witches' 15th goal in four league and cup matches.

Egerton refused to relent, and captain Rory Pownall tapped in after an hour.

He sent a looping header out of Masters' reach to make it 5-2, then Sebastian Waxman added a third inside a 10-minute spell to set up a nervy final quarter of an hour for Middlewich,

However they did not concede again.

Town turn their attention to the Cheshire League's JA Walton Challenge Cup this Saturday, when they host competition debutants FC St Helens.

Following back-to-back defeats in their first two group-stage matches, they are the only side in their section yet to pick up a point.
