Great Budworth WI by Shirley Almquist
The Centenary of the National Federation of Women's Institutes was joyfully celebrated in Great Budworth with WI members hand bell ringing a selection of familiar tunes. Customers at the George & Dragon, primary school pupils, and a large gathering of visitors enjoyed the entertainment on a sunny afternoon. Shirley Humphreys, the ringers' patient teacher, was thanked and presented with a gift and flowers.
Interval Prosecco and a celebratory cake, baked by June Wilkinson, was shared, and an encore given. Susan and Douglas Bicket, visitors from Ottawa, Canada said "We thoroughly enjoyed the hand bell performance and congratulate the ladies on a fine performance. The cake was good too!"
Later in the week, members attended a comical play ‘Raising Agents’ at Winsford Academy. To a packed hall, Mikron, a travelling theatre company, performed the story of a WI planning their centenary celebration. The four actor/musicians skilfully presented a heart-warming performance. The writer, Maeve Larkin, must have studied WI ladies very closely!
