NORTHWICH U3A members were welcomed by the chairman to their recent meeting and were brought up to date with various groups and news of outings.

The guest speaker was Betty Hayhurst.

Her talk was entitled ‘a visit to the antiques and collectors fair’.

Betty has developed a great interest in antiques over the years.

She has seen changes in what interests people and also the way that they buy their items.

Betty believes that people are more likely to barter for items that they want to purchase.

Betty brought a selection of items with her and gave tips on what she believes is really worth buying.

Saucy postcards by Donald McGill are still very much sought after and due to the fact that millions were printed, there must still be a few of them out there.

Cards produced during the First World War had beautiful silk pictures on the front.

These are still very are collectible but condition is important.

War medals and trench art are also still both sought after.

Moorcroft pottery is popular and still commands a good price.

Wedgwood pottery however, can often be bought for less than it actually cost when new.

Betty reminded members that they should always buy items which they really like rather than buying an item as an investment.

At the end of the talk Betty was thanked and members were then able to have a close look at her collection.

The next meeting will be on April 15.

The speaker will be Mark Bevan with his talk entitled ‘ White mischief and Vale Royal legacy’.
