by Caroline Young PRESIDENT for the month, Rosemary Mullett informed members that the date for the centenary celebration Picklefest and autumn lunch had been changed to Saturday, October 10.

She also reported the death of Olga Taggat, of one of their most faithful members and supporters, she was 98.

Sue Williams reported on the Cheshire Federation spring meeting, and a number of members arranged to attend the PALs lecture by Prof Kevin Taylor of Manchester University on ‘shale gas and fracking, information not emotion’.

Guest speaker, George Hughes gave a talk entitled ‘guards and palaces’ about his life in the Grenadier guards.

As he is a Welfare Officer of the Guards Association he was able to bring a genuine guard’s uniform, complete with busby.

Members learned all the inside details of busbies, uniform details differentiating the five guards regiments and the varied demands on soldiers moving from active duties abroad to being on parade at Buckingham Palace and then back to active duty in rapid succession.

All WI’s have been invited to send a delegate to the garden party at Buckingham Palace.

Members who are able to travel to London were asked to give their names to secretary, Valerie Mitchell.

The name of the lucky member will be drawn at the April meeting.

The next meeting will be on April 14, at 7.30pm in Acton Bridge Parish rooms when Judy Popley will give a talk entitled ‘a prospect of Arley’. Visitors are very welcome.
