Members of Northwich Welsh Society had to call off their visit to a Dylan Thomas evening near Wrexham, because the principal actor had been taken ill, consequently a hasty meeting was called within the season’s normal programme of events based on “Things Welsh”.

Two members brought along family heirlooms. Chairman Neil Evans of Winsford brought along the ensign from the ship “Surrey”, a collier which traded out of Barry, and on which his grandfather served. Neil, who is a railway buff, also brought along a token key from the Dovey Junction which permitted trains to enter a single line track.

Julia Rogers also of Winsford brought along and spoke about her heirloom, a tool used in the slate quarry at Blaenau Ffestiniog to split and dress the slates.

Gwili Lewis of Castle related his experience with cold telephone calls, mainly from centres in India. He has had calls when the caller wanted to speak to his late wife who died four years ago. He has resorted to speaking Welsh to them! He had a shock recently when the person at the other end spoke Welsh. He was from Swansea calling on behalf of an insurance company.

Helena Evans, Weaverham spoke about Monmouth born Charles Stewart Rolls son of Lord Llangattock and of Rolls Royce fame.

The lively question and answer session following each speaker added to the evening’s enjoyment.

The next meeting, a quiz night, is on Monday, November 17, at 7.30pm at the Castle Community Church.

Members will join in the Carol Service on Monday, December 15, from 7.30pm.
