THE guest speaker at the last meeting was Martin Blow of Special Perennials nursery in Hankelow, who was talking about day lilies.

He recently appeared on Gardener’s World and gave an amusing insight into the “pleasures” of appearing on the programme.

It was a ‘we are coming, no we’re not’ scenario.

He eventually only got a few days’ notice of when Carol Klein and entourage were definitely arriving.

It turned out to be an enjoyable but exhausting experience.

Martin shared his extensive knowledge and huge love of day lilies with members.

The plants are not related to lilies but their flowers are a similar shape and last for just one day.

They come in a huge array of colours, many are strongly scented and are very attractive to bees.

Growers in America first began to develop the variety of flower shapes and colours that we see today, but there are many growers in this country producing new varieties.

The American growers come up with the most unusual names.

There is an extensive range of colours from yellow and orange through to almost black. The only shades not available are blue and pure white.

Flower shapes can have ruffled edges, be circular, triangular, singles or doubles with different coloured throats and be of varying sizes. The choice is overwhelming.

Martin also gave useful advice on growing and caring for day lilies. They are easy to grow and are undemanding plants which are not attacked by many pests.

The best slug deterrent he has found are “slug hoovers” otherwise known as Indian Runner ducks, which he swears by.

The presentation was most enjoyable and members were left wanting some of these most attractive plants. There will be an opportunity to see Martin and his plants at local plant sales at Stoneyford Nursery and Abbeywood next year.

The next meeting will be on Tuesday, October 28 when Richard Chrimes will talk about ‘Pots for Winter Colour’.

New members and visitors always welcome. Ring 01606 852671 for more information or visit the website weaverhamgardeners.btck.co.uk for more information about the group.
