BYLEY residents have labelled a main road that runs through their village the most dangerous in Cheshire after nearly 40 years of campaigning to enforce a speed limit.

Byley Primary School - which sits on Moss Lane – is one of only six schools in Cheshire which doesn’t have an enforced speed limit outside its gates.

And after decades of complaining, parents, teachers, pupils and residents have stepped up their campaign against what they say is an accident waiting to happen.

“We’ve got no speed limit in front of the school on Moss Lane but if you go further down towards Lower Peover there is a 40mph and 30mph limit,” said resident Martin Prince, 59, who has labelled it the most dangerous road in Cheshire.

“The children who go to the school actually have to cross that road because they use the village hall for some of their lessons.

“Common sense would say it’s obviously deemed necessary to have speed limits outside school - it’s not rocket science.

“We’ve had two major accidents since Christmas - one at the Lilly Lane junction and one in Moss Lane.

“Do we really want a child to be killed before we take action? The situation should be taken as a priority.”

Jane Dunsheath, headteacher at the school, said they’ve been campaigning for a speed limit since 1973.

“Our parents are very sensible, they are well aware of the problem which is why there has been no accident to date,” she added.

“We did get some flashing hazrd lights installed five years ago, which has helped a little.

“During the school day there isn’t a great deal of traffic but it’s the speed that some motorists drive down there - sometimes it’s frightening.”

Cheshire West and Chester Council said it is working to review all speed limits on A and B roads in the borough.

A council spokesperson said: “As part of the Speed Limit Review, we propose to reduce the existing derestricted speed limit down to 50mph which will be funded through the Local Transport Plan.

“We are aware that Byley Parish Council and local residents have been campaigning for a review of the existing speed limit on Moss Lane outside the primary school but this would need to be considered as a side road at the same time as Byley Lane.

“We are fully supportive of the requests for reduced speed limits in Byley village and we will continue to work with the Parish Council.”
