VOLUNTARY and community groups across the region can sleep soundly at night after the new Cheshire East council made a pledge to continue to support them when it takes over local government services in April.

Currently the four merging authorities – Congleton, Crewe and Nantwich, Macclesfield and Cheshire County Council – contribute more than £3million in financial aid to more than 1,000 organisations and Cheshire East has pledged to continue the support during the transition period.

Clr David Brown, portfolio holder for performance, said: “Volunteers provide a cornerstone service to our society and it is our duty as a local authority to champion their contribution, work together and support these community organisations to deliver vital services to all residents including some of our vulnerable citizens.”

Voluntary and community groups across east Cheshire have already formed a Cheshire East Congress in a bid to work alongside the new council.
