THREE on-call firefighters from Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service are taking part in the first ever Run Middlewich 5K.

The trio will be wearing their full fire kit and carrying breathing apparatus sets, which weigh more than 12 kilograms, to help promote recruitment for the town’s fire station.

The runners, who are all based at Middlewich Community Fire Station and live in the town, aim to promote the role of on-call firefighters in their community and hopefully inspire fellow runners to join the service.

Firefighter Ashley Powell said: “It is a great feeling to have my colleagues taking part in this inaugural event and were all looking forward to the day, although as you can imagine running along carrying all the equipment is a mental challenge as much as it is physical.”

The group are keen to raise awareness of the work undertaken by on-call firefighters and encourage more people to join the service.

Ashley added: “The role of on-call firefighters is a challenging one, but it’s also extremely rewarding, and it’s great being part of a team who are here to support our community and keep people safe.

The team has taken part in several runs including the Great Manchester 10k and Half Marathon events; raising thousands of pounds for charities including The Firefighters Charity & Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.

Runners will also be accepting donations on the day towards The Firefighters Charity, which helps and rehabilitates firefighters injured on or off duty.
