A CYCLING group which enables disabled people from all over Cheshire to enjoy riding is on the lookout for new volunteers.

Wheels for All is an inclusive cycling initiative which provides specially adapted bikes for park sessions.

The group is looking for more volunteers to help with all aspects of running the club which aims to create an environment where anyone can cycle on a regular basis regardless of their ability.

Chris Palin, 61, started volunteering in 2009, he said: “I helped out on the health rides where we took people out on the bikes to improve their fitness.

“I found out that sessions for people with disabilities were starting and so I joined this new team.

“We’ve been running this club for nine years and have helped range of ages and disabilities, from people with mental health issues, to those who have been involved in industrial accidents.”

The group currently trains children as young as three and used to have two regular 90-year-old women attend.

Chris said: “We have a large variety of bikes - side by side bikes, tandems, four wheelers, three wheelers and hand bikes.

“People may not have the confidence to be out on the roads, so they can cycle around the running track and the park.”

The specially adapted bikes can help those who have had knee and hip operations because the wheels respond to slight movements.

Chris added: “Our boast is that we have never been beaten by a disability – we’ve had people visit with an issue and don’t think they can do it but we’ve always managed to accommodate their needs.”

The volunteers emphasise the collaborative effort of the group explaining how a blind man partners with a woman with a weakness in her arm and together they steer and cycle around the track.

Beaver and Scout groups also visit the track where the team can provide the facilities for boys to do their cycling and disability badge in one go.

The team are looking for enthusiastic people with great communication skills to try out the scheme and see if they would like to volunteer or join in with the cycling.

The group meets at Victoria Park, Warrington every Friday 3pm until 4pm and sessions start again in March.
