HIGHWAYS England has reassured motorists that ongoing smart motorway works will not be impacted by the demise of joint-contractors Carillion.

Carillion entered liquidation on Monday. Along with Kier, they are working on the smart motorways scheme between junctions 16 and 19 of the M6.

The project is due for completion next March.

A Highways England spokesman said: “We have been monitoring the situation for some time and Carillion has kept us informed throughout.

“This has enabled us to develop contingency plans to ensure the continued safe delivery of any schemes that Carillion is involved in on behalf of Highways England.”
