A DISTRIBUTION park has given its backing to HS2, claiming it will improve productivity in the north.

MA6NITUDE, in Middlewich, has thrown its weight behind the proposed high-speed railway as part of a report issued by HS2 Ltd.

It is one of more than 100 employers that were consulted to discuss the impact of the railway, which will connect London to Crewe, and then on to Manchester through mid Cheshire.

Bob Nicholson, development director at MA6NITUDE, said: “The potential of HS2 to significantly impact on the productivity of the north cannot be underestimated.

“Connecting people, places and goods as part of a world-class transport system will be vital to ensuring the north’s ambitions are fulfilled.

“Better linking labour supply with northern cities and businesses can only improve our capabilities to serve markets at home and further afield - unlocking regional locations previously overlooked and giving them the power to drive real economic growth.”

HS2’s report highlights the regional strengths of highly skilled manufacturing clusters, universities and research centres, and cutting edge technology entrepreneurs.

But it warns that more needs to be done to draw them together and realise their full potential in the modern economy.

Chris Grayling MP, transport secretary, added: “This study clearly shows transport investment is crucial to a strong and resilient economy.

“That's why we are investing in all forms of transport including the biggest rail modernisation programme for over a century to improve services for passengers – providing faster and better trains with more seats.”
