VOLUNTEERS along with Saltscape have restored mileposts from the 18th century along the Trent and Mersey Canal.

The project, funded by the National Lottery’s Heritage Fund, started at Middlewich and finished a month later at Preston Brook.

This is the first time since the 1970s there has been a co-ordinated effort to restore the mileposts after time and British weather left them in disrepair.

Beth Harrison, a heritage trainee who co-ordinated volunteers, said: “This has been such an interesting project to work on.

“It sums up so many of Saltscape’s aims as a landscape partnership – preserving the historic feature of our waterways, celebrating outdoor environment and train volunteers to learn new skills.”

The original milestones in the 1700s would have been stones but were upgraded to the cast iron structure in 1819.

Saltscape will be helping to run the north west Industrial Archaeology Conference in the Lion Salt Works on Saturday, September 29.
