CHESHIRE East council is to produce a new legal framework which governs the way it operates.

A review of the constitution will focus on refining current processes and procedures to maximus efficiency, governance and transparency.

The aim is to provide better clarity on how CEC operates and enable greater community engagement with the democratic process.

Kath O’Dwyer, acting chief executive for CEC, said: “We welcome the extremely helpful advice of our external legal advisers and will set in motion a comprehensive programme of work.

“This will bring together the recommendations and aspirations of elected members and officers.”

CEC has commissioned Bevan Brittan solicitors to carry out an initial review of its constitution and report back.

The council has now appointed a sub-committee of eight elected member to recommend any changes that should be made.

Cllr Andrew Martin, chairman of the constitution committee, said: “Our intention is that this review will make the democratic process more accessible to our residents, members, officers, partners and stakeholders.”

Final proposals will go to full council for consideration.
