MIDDLEWICH councillors are hoping to offer ‘something different’ with the new town market.

On Saturday, July 22, the first Mexon Market took place in Wheelock Street, a monthly event held in partnership between Middlewich Town Council, Middlewich Vision and traders.

Town councillors attended the first market to take questions and receive feedback from residents.

Cllr Pam Farrell said: “It was a fabulous day and I thank everyone who came out to support the first Mexon Market.

“We even had one stall that sold out by the end of the day. It brings great footfall into the town and I hope people continue to support it.

“As we go along we would like to get more local people involved. This is also an event run by volunteers so anyone wishing to help should get in touch.”

MTC has also put in a funding bid to Cheshire East Council so that it can purchase its own stands and hire them out at a much reduced rate.

Cllr Mike Hunter said: “This is a brand new market and it is being done differently to the previous one.

“It is going to take a process of learning from everyone involved as it is not being done by a professional company such as the Makers Market.

“The feedback I got was that people were glad to see the market back in the town but that we could have done with a few more stalls. That will come with time.

“Middlewich has grown at a much faster rate than any of us expected. But alongside that the town centre has been on a downward spiral.

“If we can encourage just 10 per cent of the town to support the market then that will see Wheelock Street booming and it would make a huge difference."

The next market takes place on Saturday, August 19.
