POLICE are warning residents to stay vigilant after a cold caller duped a vulnerable elderly woman out of more than £90.

Last Thursday, June 8, a woman targeted the homes of three elderly people in Knutsford to ask for money in order to catch a train.

While two of those targeted refused, the third – who suffers from Alzheimer’s – handed over around £60 in the first instance, and a further £30 when the woman returned later that same day.

A carer for elderly residents, who reported the incident to police, said that one man offered to drive the cold caller to Chelford railway station, at which point the culprit – who identified herself as Kelly – ran away.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said: “On Thursday, June 8, local officers received three separate reports from residents who had been visited by cold callers asking for money.

“In each of the cases the callers claimed that they have run out of money and needed cash to get back to their home towns.

“In two of the cases the victims refused to hand over any money, but in one case a vulnerable resident handed over more than £90.”

Officer are asking Knutsfordians to look out for the elderly.

Sgt Kelly Johnston said: “Following these incident I would like to appeal to the local community to look out for elderly relatives, friends and neighbours to help reduce the likelihood of someone else becoming a victim.

“I would also like to remind all residents about the importance of not giving money to anyone who calls at your home unexpectedly.

“It’s also important that you don’t let strangers into your home; if somebody claims that they are from a legitimate organisation then make sure you ask for identification.

“Most importantly, if you have any doubts about them being genuine, don′t let them in and ask them to come back later when you are not alone. Any suspicious activity should be reported to police.”

Residents are advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to Cheshire Police on 101. Information can also be reported anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
